WHAT IS IT?

The Onderbuik is made up of 21 interdesciplinairy Utrecht-based artists.
Located on a green island in Utrecht, we create, expiriment, rehearse and present work within the thick concrete walls of a cold war bunker.
Since 2017 we have been expirimenting the borders of art and music, producing music, hosting concerts from local and international musicians, organizing freeplay sessions, giving workshops and more.

LOCATION

WHERE IS IT?

Fort Lunet I is part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. During the Cold War, an atomic bunker was built on the fort to serve as a command shelter for the Burger Beweging (BB). The bunker’s secluded location and the surrounding calm give the fort a truly unique ecological character.

Less than a fifteen-minute bike ride from the Dom Tower, this hidden city oasis is home to rare plants and flowers. Traces of the Cold War can still be seen in many of the bunker’s original features and ornaments. These distinctive elements have inspired various makers in the past, leading to musical performances in the Onderbuik during Monument Day and Waterline walking tours.

The soundproof atomic bunker offers a rare and valuable space for musicians—a fully utilized 400m² facility in a city where many are trained, but permanent development spaces for loud activities are scarce.
